Average Housing Costs in Brunswick & the Golden Isles of Georgia Probably nowhere is Brunswick and the Golden Isles more of a study in contrasts than in the types, styles and costs of the homes on the market. Because of the resort nature of Sea Island, St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island, executive level homes are plentiful here, some with gorgeous ocean and/or marsh views. It’s easy enough, however, to find a smaller bungalow or condominium at a reasonable price within an easy walk to the beach, or even family homes on larger lots close to the network of bike paths on the islands. Real values can be found in the city of Brunswick and the mainland portions of Glynn County. If you can live with being 15 minutes from the beach by car, you can find homes on the mainland that are comparable in size and quality of construction to those on the islands at almost half the price. For example, a three-bedroom, two-bath, 1642-sq. ft. home built in 2006 in North Glynn County sells for $199,000. Or, a 1980’s 3-bedroom, 2-bath 1200 sq. ft. condo in Brunswick runs $151,000. Brunswick is pursuing downtown revitalization through a comprehensive approach to economic redevelopment and historic preservation.
Those who love the charm of Old England may want to consider owning a beautiful, turn-of-the-century home in Historic Downtown Brunswick amidst enormous live oak trees draped with Spanish moss. For example, a three-bedroom, 2-bath, 1600-sq. ft. 1920’s home here can be yours for $300,000. Centered at the intersection of Newcastle and Gloucester Streets, the traditional commercial corridors of the city, Historic Downtown Brunswick, named for Braunsweig, Germany, the ancestral home of King George II, is the largest small-town urban National Register Historic District in Georgia. The streets and squares are lined with homes noted for their turn-of-the-century and eclectic mix of architecture. The roads are laid out in a grid pattern based on General James Oglethorpe’s design, and named in honor of English royalty and geography. Examples include "Prince," "Halifax," "Gloucester," "Norwich," and "Hanover" streets.
